Decorations:
* Ribbon and tinsel can cause gastrointestinal blockages that can
be life threatening.
* Tree ornaments can be swallowed or broken. Broken
ornaments can injure paws, mouths or other parts of the body.
* Fluid in bubbling lights is toxic, snow spray and snow flock can
cause serious reactions and Styrofoam is a choking hazard.
* Pine needles can puncture holes in intestines when
ingested.
* Anchor Christmas trees to the ceiling so they do not fall over
on pets.
* Keep string, cloth and scissors out of pets reach while
decorating. These can lead to serious injuries.
Toys:
* Make sure pet gifts are appropriate for your pet.
* Avoid new treats that may cause digestive upsets.
* Keep all children's toys out of reach.
* Pick up all toy packaging and immediately dispose of it to
prevent accidental ingestion by curious pets.
* Batteries contain corrosives that can cause oral and
gastrointestinal ulcers.
Electrocution and Burns:
* Tape down or cover electric cords to avoid shock or burns.
* Unplug lights when you are not at home.
* Keep candles on high shelves.
* Use fireplace screens to avoid burns.
Foods:
* Yeast dough can rise in the stomach and cause extreme
discomfort. This must be surgically removed.
* Keep scraps and garbage out of reach.
* Poultry bones can splinter and cause damage or blockage in the
gastrointestinal tract.
* Spicy or fatty foods can cause severe pancreatitis.
* Moldy or spoiled foods can cause food poisoning.
* Keep your pet on their normal diet during the holiday season to
avoid gastrointestinal upset (vomiting/diarrhea) caused from a
change in food.
